A Soldier's Story

For just a minute or two, step into my life. I am an American soldier in the Army Special Forces. I have just returned from a one-year tour of duty in Iraq, where I lived, shared meals, slept and fought beside my Iraqi counterpart as we battled insurgents in the center of a thousand-year-old city. I am a conflicted man, and I want you to read the story of that experience as I lived it. In the interest of security, I have omitted some identifying details, but every word is true.

Routine and Ritual

I wake in the cold and dark of each morning to the sound of a hundred different muezzins calling Muslim men and women to prayer. These calls reverberate five times per day throughout a city the size of San Francisco. Above this sound I also hear two American helicopters making their steady patrol over the rooftops of the city and the blaring horns of armored vehicles as they swerve through dense city traffic. As a combat adviser and interrogator, I find these contrasts very appropriate for the life that I now lead.

This morning, on the Iraqi base in which I live, I walk 100 feet from my bedroom to work and back again. These are the same 100 feet I will travel month after month for one year. During every trip I smile, put a hand to my heart, sometimes a hand to my head, and say to every passing Iraqi the religious and cultural words that are expected from a fellow human being. In Iraq, one cannot separate Islamic culture from the individual. They are intrinsically woven into the fabric of daily life, but for most Westerners, they seem abnormal. I sit in smoke-filled rooms and drink sugar-laden tea in small crystal glasses. I spray tobacco-scented air freshener, kiss cheeks three times or more, allow the Iraqi on the right to pass through the doorway first. I know never to inquire on the health of a wife or elder daughter. I even hold hands with other men.

I proclaim my submission to God and my relationship to reality by saying "God willing" when referring to any future event. I say "God bless you" every time someone takes a seat. I eat with my hands, standing up, taking food from communal bowls. I attend work meetings where socializing is always the first priority. I hear the expressions "upon my mustache" or "by my eyes" or "over my head"--signifying the most binding and heartfelt of oaths. One day, I ask an Iraqi friend how many relatives he has and he answers, "In the city, maybe a thousand."

I have slowly come to realize that in Islam, and in Iraq, every action is worship. Every single thing that a person does--not just prayer or the time spent in a mosque but every action--is in fact an act of veneration. So yes, many things are different here. Yet we all have become friends--good friends--in part because I am here; I honor them and their religion by going out of my way to show them respect. Not all Americans act this way.

Many Americans assume that if a person does not speak English, it implies a lack of intelligence or some mental simplicity. We usually speak up only when spoken to. We attend meetings to pass information in the most efficient ways possible; our goal is always to decrease time while not losing content. For most Americans, God is intensely personal and religious utterances are not considered appropriate in a group of strangers. Our society is established on the principle of separating religion from state. In America, tobacco is quickly becoming a social taboo, and most men do not hold hands. If we are the first to arrive at a door, we enter first. We go on dates to meet future spouses--this is a cultural activity that I try again and again to explain. Also, Americans are a pragmatic people. We calculate the merit of an action first by its utility. In Islam, such a philosophy is immoral, and this truth is clearly manifest in the current clash between the Muslim and the postmodern worlds. So yes, we are very different. Yet if I look closely, with eyes wide open, I see that we are in some ways very much alike.

I jogged this morning around the small Iraqi base where I live. It was 6:00 a.m. and mildly warm. I wore very revealing blue Nike running shorts with ankle socks while listening to Limp Bizkit on my iPod. I slowly passed a small group of Iraqis and they all just stared, unsmiling. As I came closer, with a huge smile spread across my face, I put my hand to my heart and said, "Peace be upon you all," (in Arabic of course) while gasping for air. They all, in unison,
completely changed and beamed smiles, waved, talked, gave me a thumbs-up and replied, "Peace be upon you."

Insurgents

On this small plot of land where I live, next to the Tigris River, in the very center of an Islamic metropolis, I help find and then interrogate terrorists alongside the Iraqi officer whom I advise and with whom I also live. We interrogate hundreds of suspected terrorists over many, many months. One of my responsibilities is to insure that prisoners are not abused. This I have done.

But for a year I have also been an observer of an immensely complicated situation. I am a soldier who fights alongside Iraqis, and I interact daily with and hear the words of Iraqi soldiers, civilians and insurgents alike. Through their eyes I see the strengths, foibles and faults of my military and culture.

Sometimes I wish for the return of my ignorance. If no one else can understand my distress, I hope other Americans who fought shoulder to shoulder with other cultures--the French, Filipino, the Nungs and Yards and tribesmen of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia--will understand.

From my seat in a dark basement room I understand that many of those who terrorize have always hated the Americans. But being Muslim is definitely not a predisposition for violence; quite the opposite for most Iraqis.

Why is it that many have slowly transformed over three years from happily liberated American supporters, to passive supporters of the insurgency, to active fighters of the American "occupation"? "I love Americans but hate your military," says a college professor turned insurgent. "Americans have come here because you want our oil and because of your support of Israel. You bring democracy, but the Iraqi pays the price." These were the first words I heard from a man I will call Ibrahim.

The Iraqi Army had captured him. He was angry, and for the first time he was
sitting face to face with the American soldier whom he hates beyond reason. That was two weeks ago.

Yesterday, I put two red plastic chairs outside in the sun and spoke with him again. This time, I believe I am not the American soldier he has come to hate. This time I am "Mr. Bill," and it is now hard for him to hate me. I can see and sense his inner turmoil. For Ibrahim and for me, it is hard to hold on to the hate when the once-indistinct face becomes a real person. Later, he admits to having been deceived about the evil that is the American soldier. For two weeks I have spoken Arabic with him, started and ended every interaction with the required cultural and religious sayings, and demonstrated knowledge of his religion. For two weeks I have shown Ibrahim that I respect him as both an Iraqi and as a Muslim.

"It is how you act," he says, "and how we are treated that makes me fight. For many Iraqis this anger at you is just an excuse to kill for money or greed. But for most others, they truly feel they are doing what is right. But you give them this excuse; the American military gives them the excuse." So now terrorist leaders pretending to be pious Iraqis target this very common base anger, Iraqis fight and civilians raise their fists to salute the Holy Fighter.

"Two years ago I saw Abu Ghraib and what Americans did to women. I became an insurgent," whispers a man I call Kareem, another civilian turned insurgent.

"You come into our homes without separating the women and children, or asking the men politely if you may enter. Almost every hour of my life I hear some noise or see some sight of the American military. Soldiers talk with Iraqis only from behind a gun, from a position of power and not respect. Last week American soldiers got on a school bus and talked with all of the teenage girls. You had them take off their hijab so you could see their faces. You do not respect our women. This is the biggest of all problems of yours. You do not respect our women. How can we believe that Americans want to help when you do not even respect us or our faith?"

I later tell Kareem that these soldiers thought a person hiding a bomb was on the bus. This was obviously too little and too late. Perceptions are what count and word of American soldiers demanding to see the faces of Muslim women streamed from cellphone to cellphone across an entire city. Perhaps different from other past insurgencies fighting in different societies, within Iraq and over years, negative perceptions are what transform a citizen into an insurgency supporter and then into an insurgent. Now I drive throughout the crowded city alternating between shooting a machine gun and throwing Beanie-Babies to waving children. I think that at least the children are out in the streets and most are still waving. But even this hopeful sight is disappearing.

Last night the Iraqi Army captured Ibrahim's cell leader and brought the two together in the same small room. For Ibrahim, this was a very traumatic moment, for he saw that the pious Muslim man, whom he followed but had not met, was in fact a 27-year-old tattooed common criminal. Ibrahim began to weep when he realized he had been deceived. A greedy and immoral man who killed for money while pretending to be religious had skillfully manipulated Ibrahim's anger at Americans. Before Ibrahim was turned over to the Iraqi authorities, I saw him teaching soldiers to use their new office computer. He was helping them to type up his own written confession. But Ibrahim's transformation is an anomaly. Such a confluence of peaceful events does not often turn an insurgent away from the insurgency. Most insurgents continue to fight the hated American soldier whom they have never met. Their hope is that the American soldier will just go away.

Bursting Bubbles

I have slowly come to understand that if we are to succeed in Iraq, we must either change the way we perceive and treat those we want to help or we must disengage the great percentage of our military from the population. The Iraqi base where I now live was once a small American base. The anxiety and distress of American soldiers in years past are scratched in the ceiling over my bed.

"The mind is a terrible thing...," "keep a sharp look-out during your descent," "happiness is a temporary state of mind," "control is just an illusion" and "nothing is as it seems." Across the room, on another wall, next to another bed, are other words from another soldier.

They read, "My score in this War: Arabs=10, cars=10, houses=3."

American soldiers are angry and frustrated with Iraqis. Iraqis are angry and frustrated with Americans. Many Iraqis just want American soldiers to go away, and I struggle within myself not to agree. Day after day I observe the interactions of Americans with Iraqis and am often ashamed. I see that required classes given to all American soldiers on cultural sensitivity do not work; 100,000 or more American soldiers daily interacting, engaging and fighting Iraqis within their own society for more than three years will inevitably create a wellspring of citizen hostility. In this war, none of us can change who we fundamentally are.

American military culture interacts with Iraqi Islamic culture like a head-on collision. And massive deployments of American soldiers fighting a counterinsurgency now hurts more than it helps. When we focus on the military solution to resolve a social problem, we inevitably create more insurgents than we can capture or kill. As a consequence, real "Islamic terrorists" subverting their own tolerant religion will use this popular anger and sense of resentment to their advantage. As much as they hate and fear us, they also say that we cannot just leave the mess that we have made.

"I know the American military cannot now leave Iraq," says another captured insurgent whom I will call Muhammad. "If you did, we would all start fighting each other until one person killed enough enemies to come out on top. When I stop seeing your military shooting at civilians on our streets and I stop seeing Iraqi soldiers and policemen as your puppets, then I will stop fighting."

Muhammad may be naïve and living in a bubble of projected motivations and false perceptions. But his bubble burst when he was captured and plucked from an insular society. My own bubble burst when I was taken out of my society and put into Muhammad's. Military leaders tell us to "focus on training the Iraqi soldiers and policemen to fight, and do not fight the insurgency yourself." Yet if the citizen is angry with us, won't this anger just transfer to the very people we train and fight with? What if we are unintentionally assuring that the Iraqi soldiers and policemen will have someone to fight against if we leave?

The Iraqi civilian I speak with says that is so. In the eyes of many, there is now no difference between the American on patrol and the Iraqi policeman or soldier who is with the American on patrol. If the citizen believes that the American military is an "occupying power," won't he now perceive the Iraqi policeman or soldier as this occupier's puppet?

American soldiers do live within self-imposed bubbles of isolation. These are
called American bases and are where the greatest percentage of soldiers live and never leave. These bubbles are far different from the universe of Muhammad and his colleagues. We know that Muhammad's beliefs about who we are and what motivates us are mostly false. His first perceptions are defined by culture and religion, careful words of terrorist leaders, and a thousand channels of satellite television beamed into the homes of almost every Iraqi. It is then our behavior that contributes to these negative perceptions. Our self-imposed isolation and the citizens' perceptions may be all that the insurgency needs to continue and be successful.

I have come to realize that we isolate our soldiers from the societies in which we operate. We airlift and sealift vacuum-sealed replicas of America to remote corners of the world; once there, we isolate ourselves from the very people we are trying to protect or win over. An Iraqi once told me, "How you treat us must be like how African-Americans felt."

If you're an American soldier in Iraq working as an adviser, ask yourself this:
Is the Iraqi I live and fight with not allowed to enter any American facility?
If you are a military adviser or training to be an adviser, look around where you eat:
Are the Americans on one side of the room and the Iraqis on the other?
Do you even eat with Iraqis?
Do you go out of your way to avoid eye contact and thus not greet the Iraqis you walk by?
Do you try to learn their language or follow their customs?
Do you habitually expect Iraqis to share intelligence and then not respond in kind?
Do you distrust them?

Last week I read an article in an American newspaper that described a very common scene. Getting ready to go on a mission with an Iraqi policeman, a young American soldier snaps at an Iraqi officer and says, "Get off the cellphone."

Then this same soldier turns to another American soldier and says, "He is probably warning a terrorist that we are coming." It may not be racism, only ignorance combined with frustration and paranoia, but to the Iraqi, it sure does feel like racism.

To play the role of a combat adviser--something American military personnel are increasingly asked to do--is to live within a foreign culture and to train and fight with a foreign military. Many American soldiers are not capable of such an important role or mission. The job is long, very difficult, and set within a very austere, hostile and unfamiliar environment. The adviser becomes culturally isolated and so requires a unique personality combined with extensive training; but most lack this expertise and inclination. It's a sink-or-swim job, and most candidates sink after only a few months. They then retreat inside the shells of themselves and soon become combat advisers who do not interact or even advise.

They thus form adviser teams that are dysfunctional and counterproductive. They exist until the day arrives when they can return home to a place that is familiar, where they are not hated.
The Tightrope

American soldiers now patrol the streets with extreme caution and quick reflexes. They have come to think that every Iraqi who runs a red light or does not yield is a terrorist. They shoot at or accidentally kill civilians, which then creates one more insurgent and three more insurgency supporters. I know this cause-and-effect explanation is simplistic for an immensely complicated situation, but you get the picture. I will never fault American soldiers for their actions and reactions; it really is dangerous out there, and no other nation could ever ask for such service and sacrifice from its citizens. Yet I also try not to fault Iraqi civilians, for their truth is just as valid to them
as is mine to me.

I have seen firsthand why I cannot create stability by force within an Islamic society and why many say democracy cannot be brought by force but must evolve.

To be a moral person in a protracted counterinsurgency is my daily struggle, one in which I am asked to instill social morality on a culture that is not my own.

So what is the balance between taking charge in Iraq and/or abandoning the country? Our best response is to pull the American soldiers back and push the Iraqi soldiers/policemen forward as quickly as possible. I feel the urgency of this mandate as I type these very words on this small Iraqi base among Iraqi soldiers. As I told Ibrahim, the captured insurgent, "I want to leave your country. The only reason I stay here is because Iraqis are dying and you insist
on fighting. All we want to do is to help."

I naturally assumed he understood this. Well, he had not, and most do not. This message is one that is lacking and one that Iraqis surely need. So I find myself balanced on a tightrope bridging a deathly height. As Iraqi intelligence officers once explained to me over hot tea, "It is a race to see which of many possibilities comes first; the competency of an Iraqi Security Force with a stable and competent government, or the formation of a monolithic and deadly insurgency or civil war, both of which would prevent the latter."

In Iraq, I wish to survive and to succeed. Yet as the days pass, my hopes increasingly become mutually exclusive: The insurgency gets more effective; the citizen anger at us and the Iraqi Security Force becomes greater; the fractions in the society grow deeper and more violent; the American public becomes more impatient as the war is perceived as less legitimate and the conditions to form a stable Iraqi government become more elusive.

So I run along this rope as if in a race to get away. I run knowing full well that my speed comes only at the sacrifice of my balance. I long for the tranquility of normalcy, the comfortable, the understandable, and so I want to run from Iraq. So what then can I do besides serve admirably and hope for the best while fearing the worst?

The Iraqi officer I advise once said after months of frantically working to capture terrorists, "You need to just relax. You are here, so there will always be another terrorist to capture. Sit and drink some tea with me."

I doubt he was intentionally being prophetic. As a soldier who lives with an Iraqi, I do hope to one day just sit and drink some tea with him. To sit and talk of family without a worry in the world. But to do so, I must do more than just train, advise and fight with my Iraqi friend. I must go out of my way every single day to disprove the "Ugly American" label that is attached to me. I must approach every personal interaction as a singular opportunity to battle the insurgency and then realize that my interactions with each and every Iraqi do have very lasting and very strategic consequences.

Finely the US is bringing some of the people that have helped us the most to safety.
There are many Iraqis that work day in and day out, with the US, dodging IDEs, RPGs and gun shots to help their country and ours.
Many times these folks that helped us so much, live in fear as they are hunted by the Insurgency.
The lest we can do is give them some refuge, as we work with them to fight our enemies and secure their great country and ours.

Thai official warns of Bangkok attacks.

BANGKOK, Thailand -- The defense minister warned Thursday that Muslim insurgents in southern Thailand could extend their attacks to Bangkok after the rebels demonstrated their strength this week with a string of high-profile attacks.

Gen. Boonrawd Somtat, who said the insurgents include 1,000 armed fighters and 10,000 second-line hard-core sympathizers, said the rebels were infiltrating universities in the capital, which could be used as launching pads for assaults.

Acknowledging a security failure, he said the government's "control measures are not working 100 percent perfectly."

Let this be a reminder to us, this war is not just in the Middle East.
It is going on around the world and is the fight for the free world.

If we lose, we will be pushed a type of slavery at the point of a sword. Not that that is a bad thing if you are in to it.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A judge sentenced a 71-year-old to five years in prison for participating in a conspiracy involving the United Nations' oil-for- food program.
U.S. District Judge Denny Chin said the sentence was harsh for a defendant in poor health, but said it was reasonable and appropriate for Tongsun Park, convicted of accepting at least $2 million to secretly work on Iraq's behalf to influence the oil-for-food program.

Finely we have some justice for what was done to the Iraqi people by a corrupt U.N. program.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t stop here, as i think most of us believe, that is goes much deeper then just one man.

Service members rally against the war in Iraq

A small group of out-of-uniform active-duty service members, supported by veterans and academics, gathered inside a Norfolk, Va., church on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to hold a rally calling for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Speakers invoked King’s message of nonviolent resistance, along with his eventual opposition to the Vietnam War, as an example worth following during a war many at the rally said echoes that controversial conflict of an earlier generation – and is a war that should end now.

“It is time for U.S. troops to come home,” said Marine Corps Sgt. Liam Madden, speaking to a crowd of about 80 – not including reporters – gathered in the sanctuary of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in downtown Norfolk. He said active-duty troops have the right to speak out, and he said his opposition to the war is not driven by politics.

“It’s not political when people heed the call of their conscience,” said Madden, 22, who is stationed at Quantico Marine Corps Base and who served in Iraq with Okinawa’s 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit as a communications specialist. “Not one more of my brothers should die for a lie. This is my generation’s call to conscience.” The remarks drew cheers and a standing ovation.

“We’re not anti-war,” said Navy Mass Communications Specialist 3rd Class Jonathan Hutto, 29, who enlisted in 2004 and is assigned to the Norfolk-based carrier Theodore Roosevelt, which deployed to the Persian Gulf in 2005-06. “We’re not pacifists. We’re anti-Iraq war.”

The group’s message, he said: “There is an organized, constructive level of dissent with the ranks on this war.”

Department of Defense directives allow active-duty service members to speak their minds – short of disrespect for their commanders or the president – or make a “protected communication” with members of Congress as long as, generally, they’re in the United States, out of uniform and off duty.

Madden, Hutto and the other active-duty members who came to Monday’s rally are signatories to an online petition to Congress sponsored by Appeal for Redress, a group for active-duty, Reserve and Guard personnel started last fall by Hutto and Madden that calls for an end to the war and the “prompt” withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq.

Hutto said they’ve gathered about 1,000 signatures, mostly from enlisted service members and nearly half from the Army, in ranks ranging from E-1 to O-6.

Members of the group will present the petition to Congress on Tuesday morning on the steps of the U.S. Capitol’s Cannon House Office Building. On hand to accept the petition, group members say, will be Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, who opposes the Bush administration’s planned troop surge and favors cutting off funding for the war in an effort to halt that surge.

“Dr. King would be proud,” said Tom Palumbo of the local chapter of Veterans for Peace.

Group members say they hope other members of Congress also get the message.

“I want Congress tomorrow to realize that they are accountable to their citizens,” Madden said. “And their service members are on the front line.”

Matt Peters is one of those. A Navy electronics technician assigned to the Norfolk-based carrier Enterprise, Peters, feeling the call to arms following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, enlisted in November 2001. Then, said the now-23-year-old, “There really was no talk of invading Iraq,” he said. “We really went in a different direction than we’re in today.”

A 2003 Naval Academy graduate now in the Individual Ready Reserve used tougher words. “This administration has betrayed our armed forces,” said Lt. j.g. Fabian Bouthillette, 26. “I actually believe that the conduct of this administration is more detrimental to the Constitution than anything else. Â This was begun on an immoral, illegal basis. And we were lied to.”

Peters said he continues to willingly serve despite his misgivings over the war. “I signed up and said I’m going to do this,” said Peters, who along with his shipmates returned from duty off Iraq and elsewhere in November and remains on tap to quickly redeploy if the carrier is called upon. “But I don’t believe in what we’re doing over there. I still do my job. Is it something that kind of hurts to do? Yes.”

“Like any job, you make some compromises,” said Navy Operations Specialist 2nd Class Dave Rogers, 34, of the frigate Hawes, also based in Norfolk.

While polls show that many favor pulling out of Iraq – and a Jan. 11 USA Today/Gallup Poll showed that 66 percent of respondents “moderately” or “strongly” oppose sending more troops – many also believe an immediate rather than gradual withdrawal would cause Iraq to collapse in sectarian violence. Upheaval would certainly follow a withdrawal, Madden and others said, but they said Iraq would right itself more quickly without an American occupation.

During the Vietnam War, anti-war troops had no legal protection against expressing their views and were forced to do so through underground newspapers, said David Cortwright, one of the day’s speakers. Cortwright is a former soldier who served in Vietnam and wrote a book about that era’s military resistance, “Soldiers in Revolt.”

But while the Internet has replaced those underground papers and service members enjoy the limited protections of DoD directives, Cortwright said, those “in uniform” who speak out must still endure critics who would call them unpatriotic. Or, worse, cowards.

“It’s not cowardice,” Cortwright said. “It’s an extraordinary expression of conviction and courage.”

None of the service members questioned said they’d received any reprisals or negative feedback from their chains of command. “I’ve had no one chastise me,” Madden said. “Some feel awkward around me.”

Added Hutto, “They understand that we’re serious, and the threat of reprisal isn’t going to stop us.”

Hutto said the reactions he gets from shipmates are twofold: “One, how do I sign up? And two, I’m not so sure I can support Appeal for Redress (http://www.appealforredress.org/), but I support whatever you’re doing.”

Hutto said he is careful to separate his anti-war work with his assigned Navy duties. “If someone comes up to me, I say, ‘Give me your number, I’ll call you in the afternoon’,” he said. “I tell people, ‘When you’re on duty, be on duty’.”

So where are all the trigger pullers crying for this war to stop?
Why is it that you only seem to hear crying from the one whom have spent the lest amount of time with the Iraqi people.
I believe it comes down to fear, most of the service members speaking out are afride of going there or going again and getting hurt.
They are considering the welfare of the Iraqi, as much as they are their own.

One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: “Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident.” This is true. Remember, the murder rate is six per 100,000 per year, and the aggravated assault rate is four per 1,000 per year. What this means is that the vast majority of Americans are not inclined to hurt one another.

Some estimates say that two million Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic, staggering number, perhaps an all-time record rate of violent crime. But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less than one in a hundred on any given year. Furthermore, since many violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders, the actual number of violent citizens is considerably less than two million.

Thus there is a paradox, and we must grasp both ends of the situation: We may well be in the most violent times in history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep.

I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep. To me it is like the pretty, blue robin’s egg. Inside it is soft and gooey but someday it will grow into something wonderful. But the egg cannot survive without its hard blue shell. Police officers, soldiers and other warriors are like that shell, and someday the civilization they protect will grow into something wonderful. For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators.
“Then there are the wolves,” the old war veteran said, “and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy.” Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.

“Then there are sheepdogs,” he went on, “and I’m a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.” Or, as a sign in one California law enforcement agency put it, “We intimidate those who intimidate others.”

If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen: a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath--a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? Then you are a sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.

The gift of aggression

Everyone has been given a gift in life. Some people have a gift for science and some have a flair for art. And warriors have been given the gift of aggression. They would no more misuse this gift than a doctor would misuse his healing arts, but they yearn for the opportunity to use their gift to help others. These people, the ones who have been blessed with the gift of aggression and a love for others, are our sheepdogs. These are our warriors.

One career police officer wrote to me about this after attending one of my Bulletproof Mind training sessions:

"I want to say thank you for finally shedding some light on why it is that I can do what I do. I always knew why I did it. I love my [citizens], even the bad ones, and had a talent that I could return to my community. I just couldn’t put my finger on why I could wade through the chaos, the gore, the sadness, if given a chance try to make it all better, and walk right out the other side."

Let me expand on this old soldier’s excellent model of the sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. We know that the sheep live in denial; that is what makes them sheep. They do not want to believe that there is evil in the world. They can accept the fact that fires can happen, which is why they want fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, fire alarms and fire exits throughout their kids’ schools. But many of them are outraged at the idea of putting an armed police officer in their kid’s school. Our children are dozens of times more likely to be killed, and thousands of times more likely to be seriously injured, by school violence than by school fires, but the sheep’s only response to the possibility of violence is denial. The idea of someone coming to kill or harm their children is just too hard, so they choose the path of denial.

The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours.

Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn’t tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, “Baa.”

Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog. As Kipling said in his poem about “Tommy” the British soldier:

But it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind.

The students, the victims, at Columbine High School were big, tough high school students, and under ordinary circumstances they would not have had the time of day for a police officer. They were not bad kids; they just had nothing to say to a cop. When the school was under attack, however, and SWAT teams were clearing the rooms and hallways, the officers had to physically peel those clinging, sobbing kids off of them. This is how the little lambs feel about their sheepdog when the wolf is at the door. Look at what happened after September 11, 2001, when the wolf pounded hard on the door. Remember how America, more than ever before, felt differently about their law enforcement officers and military personnel? Remember how many times you heard the word hero?

Understand that there is nothing morally superior about being a sheepdog; it is just what you choose to be. Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle. That is, the young sheepdogs yearn for a righteous battle. The old sheepdogs are a little older and wiser, but they move to the sound of the guns when needed right along with the young ones.

Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizens in America said, “Thank God I wasn’t on one of those planes.” The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, “Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference.” When you are truly transformed into a warrior and have truly invested yourself into warriorhood, you want to be there. You want to be able to make a difference.

While there is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, he does have one real advantage. Only one. He is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population.

There was research conducted a few years ago with individuals convicted of violent crimes. These cons were in prison for serious, predatory acts of violence: assaults, murders and killing law enforcement officers. The vast majority said that they specifically targeted victims by body language: slumped walk, passive behavior and lack of awareness. They chose their victims like big cats do in Africa, when they select one out of the herd that is least able to protect itself.

However, when there were cues given by potential victims that indicated they would not go easily, the cons said that they would walk away. If the cons sensed that the target was a "counter-predator," that is, a sheepdog, they would leave him alone unless there was no other choice but to engage.

One police officer told me that he rode a commuter train to work each day. One day, as was his usual, he was standing in the crowded car, dressed in blue jeans, T-shirt and jacket, holding onto a pole and reading a paperback. At one of the stops, two street toughs boarded, shouting and cursing and doing every obnoxious thing possible to intimidate the other riders. The officer continued to read his book, though he kept a watchful eye on the two punks as they strolled along the aisle making comments to female passengers, and banging shoulders with men as they passed.

As they approached the officer, he lowered his novel and made eye contact with them. “You got a problem, man?” one of the IQ-challenged punks asked. “You think you’re tough, or somethin’?” the other asked, obviously offended that this one was not shirking away from them.

“As a matter of fact, I am tough,” the officer said, calmly and with a steady gaze.

The two looked at him for a long moment, and then without saying a word, turned and moved back down the aisle to continue their taunting of the other passengers, the sheep.

Some people may be destined to be sheep and others might be genetically primed to be wolves or sheepdogs. But I believe that most people can choose which one they want to be, and I’m proud to say that more and more Americans are choosing to become sheepdogs.

Seven months after the attack on September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer was honored in his hometown of Cranbury, New Jersey. Todd, as you recall, was the man on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania who called on his cell phone to alert an operator from United Airlines about the hijacking. When he learned of the other three passenger planes that had been used as weapons, Todd dropped his phone and uttered the words, “Let’s roll,” which authorities believe was a signal to the other passengers to confront the terrorist hijackers. In one hour, a transformation occurred among the passengers--athletes, business people and parents--from sheep to sheepdogs and together they fought the wolves, ultimately saving an unknown number of lives on the ground.

Here is the point I like to emphasize, especially to the thousands of police officers and soldiers I speak to each year. In nature the sheep, real sheep, are born as sheep. Sheepdogs are born that way, and so are wolves. They didn’t have a choice. But you are not a critter. As a human being, you can be whatever you want to be. It is a conscious, moral decision.
If you want to be a sheep, then you can be a sheep and that is okay, but you must understand the price you pay. When the wolf comes, you and your loved ones are going to die if there is not a sheepdog there to protect you. If you want to be a wolf, you can be one, but the sheepdogs are going to hunt you down and you will never have rest, safety, trust or love. But if you want to be a sheepdog and walk the warrior’s path, then you must make a conscious and moral decision every day to dedicate, equip and prepare yourself to thrive in that toxic, corrosive moment when the wolf comes knocking at the door.

For example, many officers carry their weapons in church. They are well concealed in ankle holsters, shoulder holsters or inside-the-belt holsters tucked into the small of their backs. Anytime you go to some form of religious service, there is a very good chance that a police officer in your congregation is carrying. You will never know if there is such an individual in your place of worship, until the wolf appears to slaughter you and your loved ones.

I was training a group of police officers in Texas, and during the break, one officer asked his friend if he carried his weapon in church. The other cop replied, “I will never be caught without my gun in church.” I asked why he felt so strongly about this, and he told me about a police officer he knew who was at a church massacre in Ft. Worth, Texas, in 1999. In that incident, a mentally deranged individual came into the church and opened fire, gunning down 14 people. He said that officer believed he could have saved every life that day if he had been carrying his gun. His own son was shot, and all he could do was throw himself on the boy’s body and wait to die. That cop looked me in the eye and said, “Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself after that?”

Some individuals would be horrified if they knew this police officer was carrying a weapon in church. They might call him paranoid and would probably scorn him. Yet these same individuals would be enraged and would call for “heads to roll” if they found out that the airbags in their cars were defective, or that the fire extinguisher and fire sprinklers in their kids’ school did not work. They can accept the fact that fires and traffic accidents can happen and that there must be safeguards against them. Their only response to the wolf, though, is denial, and all too often their response to the sheepdog is scorn and disdain. But the sheepdog quietly asks himself, “Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself if your loved ones were attacked and killed, and you had to stand there helplessly because you were unprepared for that day?”

The warrior must cleanse denial from his thinking. Coach Bob Lindsey, a renowned law enforcement trainer, says that warriors must practice “when/then” thinking, not “if/when.” Instead of saying,“If it happens then I will take action,” the warrior says, “When it happens then I will be ready.”

It is denial that turns people into sheep. Sheep are psychologically destroyed by combat because their only defense is denial, which is counterproductive and destructive, resulting in fear, helplessness and horror when the wolf shows up.

Denial kills you twice. It kills you once, at your moment of truth when you are not physically prepared: You didn’t bring your gun; you didn’t train. Your only defense was wishful thinking. Hope is not a strategy. Denial kills you a second time because even if you do physically survive, you are psychologically shattered by fear, helplessness, horror and shame at your moment of truth.

Chuck Yeager, the famous test pilot and first man to fly faster than the speed of sound, says that he knew he could die. There was no denial for him. He did not allow himself the luxury of denial. This acceptance of reality can cause fear, but it is a healthy, controlled fear that will keep you alive:

"I was always afraid of dying. Always. It was my fear that made me learn everything I could about my airplane and my emergency equipment, and kept me flying respectful of my machine and always alert in the cockpit."

Gavin de Becker puts it like this in Fear Less, his superb post-9/11 book, which should be required reading for anyone trying to come to terms with our current world situation:

"..denial can be seductive, but it has an insidious side effect. For all the peace of mind deniers think they get by saying it isn’t so, the fall they take when faced with new violence is all the more unsettling. Denial is a save-now-pay-later scheme, a contract written entirely in small print, for in the long run, the denying person knows the truth on some level."

And so the warrior must strive to confront denial in all aspects of his life, and prepare himself for the day when evil comes.

If you are a warrior who is legally authorized to carry a weapon and you step outside without that weapon, then you become a sheep, pretending that the bad man will not come today. No one can be “on” 24/7 for a lifetime. Everyone needs down time. But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself... “Baa.”

This business of being a sheep or a sheepdog is not a yes-no dichotomy. It is not an all-or-nothing, either-or choice. It is a matter of degrees, a continuum. On one end is an abject, head-in-the-grass sheep and on the other end is the ultimate warrior. Few people exist completely on one end or the other. Most of us live somewhere in between. Since 9-11 almost everyone in America took a step up that continuum, away from denial. The sheep took a few steps toward accepting and appreciating their warriors, and the warriors started taking their job more seriously. The degree to which you move up that continuum, away from sheephood and denial, is the degree to which you and your loved ones will survive, physically and psychologically at your moment of truth.

Today we attacked a group terrorist, where they slept in Somalia. And yet we let terrorist live in Iraq by not going after them with our full force, by this I don’t mean killing a bunch of civilians.
I mean making it easier for our soldiers to search homes and look in mosques , the way it sits now many mosques are being used to house terrorist and there destructive weapons.
American forces are aloud to do little to stop this, if they are very lucky they will get shot at from a mosque and then be able to call the Iraqis in to search it many hours later.
But I guess this is our winning strategy.
We will only win in Iraq ,when we decide to let are soldiers close down the enemies sanctuaries, tell then we will continue selling are lives on the cheep.

I some times watch Extreme Makeover on ABC, the one thing that has been bugging about the show is many of the family on the show don’t seem that needy.
So I hit the limit on the last show, a family with several older/grow kids living in a good home the made they shit hole.
Just a warning to all you dumb ass parents out there BUY A LIFE INSURANCE POLICY!

This is what the show says about this family.

When Janet and Danny left the island of Tonga in 1991, it was to give their family a better life and a better education. Danny was the strong leader in this family and the glue that held them together. That's why it was as if a bomb had hit when he suddenly died in May of 2004 from a heart attack, leaving Janet a widowed mother of nine (eight children and one nephew living in the home). With no life insurance policy and the sole provider gone, this tight knit family has been struggling both emotionally and financially.

Sorry I have not been posting much, I have been in a training course for a new job, this last month.

Now that I’m back I wanted to post a short note about a two of things the republicans did wrong this last year.
Immigration, this is one of the biggest issues the American people wanted dealt with and during the late spring/summer we got nothing.
When they did get the fence plan passed, it was in the shadow of other news and many Americans still don’t know about it.

The second thing is leadership and having a set of balls, balls to step up and get every body in line at the right time to get bills passed .
That way the American people, who tend to really live in the moment, will see you as doing something that they believe is important.
Also under a set of balls, is getting out there and thumpin the other side. When a congressmen is found with $100,000 in his freezer, you go after them hard and when the other party doesn’t force him to resign,(which we know they never would) you go after them.
Instead we sat back and let the democrats shape the debate and we let them win without any ideas, and a platform that was blank.

Well I know that isn’t the best post, but it is one to get me started again. I will be back soon with more postings.

Wheeler said almost 40 minutes passed before U.S. troops returned.
Military officials said Thursday that there was an immediate investigation, which found that no personnel had abandoned the convoy and they responded properly.
"They fought back bravely while waiting for reinforcements and attending to the casualties," Lt. Col. Michelle Martin-Hing, a spokeswoman for the Multi-National Force-Iraq, told The Associated Press in an e-mail.
In fact, Martin-Hing said, investigators recommended that one Soldier and one civilian be nominated for awards for the actions during the Sept. 20, 2005, incident.
Virginia Guard officials confirmed Thursday that its 1173rd Transportation Company was on active federal status at the time. Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Chester Carter III referred all questions to the Tampa, Fla.-based U.S. Central Command, home of key command centers in the U.S. war on terrorism.
Wheeler said that while the troops were absent, he crouched down in his truck and watched two truck drivers being shot at point-blank range.
"They just killed 'em. They just killed him. Oh my God," Wheeler said in the video.
Wheeler can be heard on the tape pleading for help on his radio: "Please help me ... I'm fixin' to get killed. I have no gun back here. I am by myself!"
Those killed in the attack were Keven Dagit, 42, of Jefferson, Iowa; Sascha Grenner-Case, age unavailable, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and Christopher Lem, 40, of Lyndon Station, Wis., said Cathy Mann, a Halliburton spokeswoman. They were killed while delivering the mail, according to a news release from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The military investigation found that "individuals at the front of the convoy reacted as they were taught by pushing forward and getting out of the kill zone of the ambush," Martin-Hing wrote.
"What is not visible in the video being shown is that they collected the casualties they could reach and laid down suppressive fire with their weapons to help get those vehicles that could move from the front of the convoy out of the kill zone," she wrote.
The troops then set up security, called for support and medical evacuations and directed the movements of other gun trucks farther back in the convoy, she said.
In a news release, KBR, Halliburton's engineering and construction subsidiary, did not address the details of the incident but said the military has "command and control" over its convoys in Iraq and is "required to provide security."

Danish Minister of Defence Soren Gade has expressed concern about the ”mission” of the Danish soldiers in Afghanistan. There should be more “reconstruction” in it so the occupying power can win the trust of the occupied Afghan people. While that is impossible because the objective of the war is to satisfy the economic and military-strategic interests of the US, that way of thinking is usable as war propaganda. “Reconstruction”, “democratic development” and “peace-keeping action” sound better than occupation and mercenary army for the US.

The peoples in Afghanistan and Iraq are fighting a legitimate armed resistance struggle for their freedom and national sovereignty against foreign occupiers and their local “elected” collaborators. But no one in the Danish national parliament supports this just freedom struggle. Instead the parliamentarians are talking about “terrorists”, “insurgents” and that the Danish mercenaries of the US “are doing a good job under difficult circumstances.”

But the only “good” occupier is the one, who is dead or deserts. The rest of them are criminals as are the responsible occupation politicians regardless of the fact that occupying Denmark, as in the case of Annemette Hommel (Danish intelligence officer charged with violating the Geneva Conventions while interrogating detained Iraqis, translator’s note), acquits them in its own “court”.

I just got through watching a portion, of a “The world can’t wait” seminar on free speech TV.
The speaker at the time was Ray McGovern a former CIA analyst. In his talk he sited a UK official that had taken a trip to Uzbekistan shortly after the fall of the talban,across the border in afgeniastan. This official said he heard reports of people having there kids tortured in front of them, daughters rape, along with other forms torture, In an effort to get information to give for Americans.

I Agree with Ray that this kind of thing must stop, and where he and I differ is that he only seems to care if it benefits American interest.
Clearly His way of thinking is flawed and selfish. If you believe something is truly wrong, you do what you can to stop it wherever it is happening!
But this is not this the case with many on the left. They still stand firm against the U.S. led action that freed the Iraqi people from organized and large scale Government sanction, child torture and rape.
This is just one way groups like “The World can’t wait” show that it is not about the people of the world it is about the politics.

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - A car commercial proclaiming a jihad on the U.S. auto market and offering "Fatwa Fridays" with free swords for the kids is offensive and should not be aired, Muslim leaders said on Sunday.
The radio advertisement for the Dennis Mitsubishi car dealership in Columbus, Ohio, has "a whole jihad theme," said Adnan Mirza, director of the Columbus office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
"They are planning on launching a jihad on the automotive market and their representatives would be wearing burqas ... ," Mirza said. "They mentioned the pope in there and also about giving rubber swords out to the kiddies -- really just reprehensible-type comments."
Details of the radio ad, which has not yet been broadcast, have been reported in the local media, but officials at the dealership declined to comment about the content of the radio spot.
Two employees at the dealership said they had been deluged with calls about the commercial.
"The ad has never been released, it is not out for public listening," said one employee who declined to give his name. He would not say whether the dealership had changed its mind about airing the commercial.
Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Motors Corp. could not immediately be reached for comment.
Mirza said several local radio stations had already rejected the ad and he hoped the controversy would convince the dealership to rethink its sales strategy.
He also said the Council on American-Islamic Relations would likely contact the dealer to "offer some kind of cultural or sensitivity awareness training."

Whole this is a very good point and I wanted to comment on it and thought it would be better in a post.
The IRA and Hezbella, both received weapons, funding and training from the U.S.S.R. during the 70s and 80s.
During this time the IRA sent some of its members to train at camps in the Mid East, with members of other terror groups.

Whole both the IRA and Ifs used similar tactics at the time there are a few things that make them very different.
One of the more obvious things is that they come from a northern European mindset this makes them much more likely to find a fix. As you can see at the time being the peace is holding and from what I know they have publicly disarmed, this I could be wrong about but I believe it so.
The other more important thing to remember is the IF forces we are fighting do not just want a piece of land back, or someone released from jail. They are fighting for the world, that is about it they will not stop tell we live under Sharia Law and may or may not have a Caliphate. That’s it nothing else.

Finley Muslim leaders are saying what many have believed for sometime now. The bad thing is there are many leaders in the American Muslim community that have aided terrorism worldwide.
They have added in the funding and in the recruitment of young men for these groups.

One things us on the outside have to remember, is that many American Muslims culture can be much different then ours. Take for instance the Mosques many of them in North America are still segregated. I have been thinking about one thing a few leftwing blogers menchend, about this world being such a rough and turbulent place now. One of them said that if they where to hold a baby, and think about what is going on now in the world, it would bring them to tears just thinking about the future the child has to live in.

Being a father, I understand wanting the best for your child, as I would say the majority of parents do.
But the idea of having a world of no hurt, pain, wars, cancer, ex girl friends leading you on making believe that you may be able to get back with them after you made the mistake of dumping them, on the surface sounds great, but as I think about it seems far fetched and I would go as far to say, goes against humun nature.
Now lets just say we did want to rid the world of suffering and we are just talking about wars, atscities against man kind (not counting stuff a Ex did to you 10 years ago), don’t you think you would need a plan. Maybe identify what groups kept wanting to fight all the time, maybe start by asking who likes to go after civilians.
But the left wingers I’m talking about, can’t do that. They can’t do that because they insist on believing that every thing is a moral equivalent, that intent means nothing. This is why they are so frustrated at the world to day, because they don’t believe in a good and a bad. Given I know there are many gray areas, but this is where intent is so important, because a doctor who kills a patient, as he tries a very risky operation to give a patient more time to live. Is not the same a guy who kills someone at a gas station. And they will stay frustrated as long as they see it all as being the same.

This is where folks like me can have peace, knowing that there is bad in the world, and knowing it will always be here. I know the most I can do is limit it as much as possible and the best way I see to do that at this time is to go against groups that wish to really oppress and stop other basic freedom, with pain and suffering.

In closing, lets try not to think like a bunch of rapture seekers, the world now is not as bad as it has been. We only need to look back over the last 100 years to get an idea of how bad it could be.

Alexander William Ochoa, the Laguna Creek High School graduate accused of breaking into his school computer to improve his grades, was either at football practice, a doctor's appointment or somewhere else on the days he is accused of tampering with school records, Ochoa's lawyer said Tuesday.

"It is a classic rush to judgment," said Hamilton Hintz Jr. of his client, who is charged with 98 felony counts of burglary and computer fraud.

Ochoa, who is entering his second year at Occidental College, is accused of boosting his grade point average to obtain a full scholarship at the Southern California university.

He has been offered a second-year scholarship worth about $44,000 and eventually wants to become a pediatrician, the attorney said.

If convicted, he faces up to six years in custody and the prospect of repaying his scholarships.

In opening statements to what is expected to be a weeklong trial, Hintz told Sacramento Superior Court Judge Richard H. Gilmour that other students had access to a teacher's password, which was used to change grades.

Deputy District Attorney Sue Wilson, who is prosecuting the case in juvenile court because Ochoa was a minor when he was charged two years ago, accuses Ochoa of changing other student's grades in an attempt to create a smoke screen to cover up his crimes.

"It is our position that any financial aid he has received has been obtained on false or fraudulent information," Wilson told the judge, who will decide Ochoa's fate without a jury.

The prosecutor mocked Hintz's characterization of his client as a successful student and accomplished football player.

"He's never learned to step up to the plate and admit what he has done was to cheat," Wilson said.

When are we going to hear people on the left really talk and complain, about the suffering of people that are not at the hands of a U.S. backed country.
We hear little of the oppression and suffering from the fighting in the Sudan. We hear lots about how bad our soldiers are treating Iraqis but little of what is going on behind closed doors in communist/socialist countries such as N. Korea, China and Vietnam. This I can’t figure out why is it that the suffering of people at the hands of the U.S. or U.S. back countries is magnified, placed at a higher value then those at the hands of communists or islamist.
The only thing that comes to mind as a reason for all this, is the left deep down wishes harm to the West and what it stands for and this is just the way a propaganda war works.
Anyway that’s all I can get out now, I should be starting to write more then I have soon.

This weekend I as I was surfing the telly I tuned to the one of the university channels 9000s on dish network.
Well what I tuned to was a talk Jane Fonda was giving at UCSB.

What I was watching was a Q&A between her and the audience. So now I’m just going to go over some of the things she said that I found interesting. The quotes I have are not exact but as close as I remember and I can not find a transcript of this online

She was asked if she was sorry for going to Hanoi. Fonda said” no I have never said I was sorry for going there, only that I was sorry for sitting on that Anti-aircraft gun.”
This is like saying “ I’m sorry I got caught” or “I’m sorry you had see that” so she is not sorry for telling on POWs when they tried to get word back to there families, she is not sorry for saying that the POWs where being treated great, and she is not sorry for aiding in the fall of a country in to the darkness of communism and all the horror took place after.

She talked about how the Democratic party had to get united, she said that one of the ways the GOP is so strong is that they have a institute where all the talking heads on the right go to learn that to say and talk about. She raddled of names including Susan Coulter. Which I imagine she was talking about Ann Coulter, also she didn’t know the name of the institute she mentioned.

Here we have one more miss use of public funds in Sacramento, in the last few months Mayor Heather Fargo has taken to be driven around by a police officer in government car. While at the same time receiving what will soon be $600 a mo. For a car that is no longer used for city business. And this officer that is tasked with driving her around is pulled from the unit that has counter terrorism as one of its jobs.

So remember that next time you hear her say we need more federal money to protect our city.

I know that I’m coming out with this a little late, but I just read about Rep. John Murtha’s comments about a on going Pentagon investigation, with regards to a Marine unit and some Iraqi civilians that may have been killed during a firefight between the Marine’s and terrorist.

Murtha said "there was no firefight."
"Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood," Mr. Murtha told reporters. "And that's what the [Pentagon] report is going to tell."

Comment like this, from a man who used his reputation as a brave Marine to help him self get elected is deplorable and cowardly.
He is attacking a group of men, who at this time have no voice in the press and is sighting a investigation that will not be complete for weeks, and worst of all some of these men may be his constituents.

Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki vowed to use "maximum force against terrorism" on Sunday, as bombs killed at least 19 people in Baghdad during the first meeting of his national unity cabinet.

With the Iraqi PM making this so called vow, I can tell you the fastst way for them to use “maximum force” is too take the rains back off of the Iraqi “Wolf” brigades and allow them to again get aggressive a the insurgents.
You have to ask how many live would have been saved had the U.S. not stepped in and demanded investigations 2005, as to the aggressive tactics by the Wolf Brigades.
If the Iraqis are allowed to get busy again, then you will quickly see a draw down to the violence.

The fact is the PC approach by the U.S. government has cost Iraqi and coalition forces and is one thing that needs to stop.

According to sources on Capitol Hill, U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) punched a Capitol police officer on Wednesday afternoon after he mistakenly pursued her for failing to pass through a metal detector.

This Rep.Continues to not respect the laws she helps make, in Oct. she was fined by the FEC for wrong doing let alone she once questioned the "Negro tolerance" of Democratic Vice President Al Gore. She also suggested on a radio show that Bush administration officials had advance knowledge of the September 11th terrorist attacks but kept quiet, suggesting a possible profit motive for defense contractors.

With the Cal Governor refusing a senate republican request to remove Rob Reiner from his chairman post as head of the state founded first 5 program, it will put one more nail in the governors political coffin.
It also shows that rarely are those in Hollywood able to make the transition from make believe to the real world, with the exception of President Ragan.
When is the Cal republican party going to realize that Schwarzenegger is not a republican and has rarely acted like one during his time as governor.

The discovery channel has a documentary on China coming up, that, they have been showing previews of.
The previews seem to show china in a positive light. One of the focus’s of the program is to show how china is a modern country.
As shows like this, as well as other things you hear try to show how good china is doing, let us not forget what tight control the Chinese government still has over it people. it is still common to have to get you boss at work to sign of on to you getting married and the ban on more then one child is not gone , just eased some.
Further more when are we going to start asking the Chinese to return annexed real estate, such as Tibet.
The Chinese have come a long way, but lets not let that thick us into believing that they are not still one of the worst countries out there.

CANBERRA, Australia, March 7 (UPI) -- A textbook used by 100 schools in Australia is being criticized for comparing the Crusades in the Middle Ages to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists.

Humanities Alive 2 compares the beliefs of both groups and says they all believed they were dying for their religion.

It ends the section by posing this question to readers: "Might it be fair to say that Crusaders who attacked the Muslim inhabitants of Jerusalem were also terrorists?"

The Australian reports some historians think the section confuses history and doesn't get specific enough to explain the context of the Crusades.

Melbourne University Professor Barry Collett called it "historically inaccurate" and "grossly misleading."

The textbooks are picked by the school, not some state authority.

School officials who chose the book said the section is used to force critical thought, analysis and discussion, not influence a student's opinion.

With the refusal of the UN to broaden its role in Iraq because violence there, it has helped to solidify the view of many , that the UN is of little use.
It seems to me that the UN will only come to your aid, if you are suffering a slow death from some thing like AIDS, but if it is a case of life and death like it was in Rwanda or the Sudan, then they will just sit on the side lines as you are massacred.
This needs to change, with the USA being the largest monetary backer of the UN it is time we start having them represent more of our values.

I am continuing my report on minimum wage in California.

So where we are at now is if you work full time at the carrent rate of $6.75hr for a year you gross $14,040.
Add in the Earned Income Tax Credit amount for 2005 which is $4,400. for someone making $14,040 and our new total is $18,440.

So now we are at $18,440 next lets see what you get from HUD. To be continued.

I read an article on minimum wage in California which $6.75 Hr, $1,170 Mo or $14,040 if you work 40 hours a week.

One thing that is not mentioned in most talks about minimum wage is all the extras someone making that amount would get in.
I am talking about things like the earned income tax, HUD and food stamps.
In the next few days the Sacramento Voice will be looking into how all the extras add up.

BERLIN, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A German newspaper cartoon depicting Iranian soccer players as suicide bombers has sparked death threats and an attack on the German Embassy in Tehran.

Cartoonist Klaus Stuttmann of the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel sparked the uproar Friday with the drawing of four Iranian players primed to explode alongside four German players dressed in army uniform.

The caption said: "The real reason why the German army has to be used during the World Cup," which Stuttman said shows he was insulting Germany, and not the Iranians.

He is opposed to Germany deploying troops to help with security this summer at the World Cup, which he says contravenes a post-World War II convention separating the police from the military.

However, the Iranian Embassy on Tuesday demanded an apology from the newspaper and insisted that the editor "make amends for this immoral act," The Times of London reported.

In addition, protestors attacked the German Embassy in Tehran Tuesday with stones and fire bombs, Deutsche Welle reported.

So as I sit in my Las Vegas hotel room, I throw on CNN and they have a story about the Muslim cartoons.
Well the anchor says that CNN will only report the news on the cartoons, but not show them like other networks, because they “don’t want to add fuel to the fire”, well right after that statement, A picture of Brittney Spears with her kid in the front seat flash’s on the screen and the anchor say to stay toned to find out more about it.

Finally after 5 years we are seeing an end to the Byrd Amendment, which is nothing more then corporate welfare.
The Democrats love to talk about the right helping corporations and the rich, but here you have a law that so far has given away $1.26 Billon to companies that that seem to not be competitive.

Army officials are investigating allegations that members of the celebrated 82nd Airborne Division appear on a gay pornography Web site, a spokeswoman said Friday.

Authorities at Fort Bragg have begun an inquiry into whether the paratroopers' actions violated the military conduct code.

Division spokeswoman Maj. Amy Hannah declined to say how many paratroopers are involved or identify their unit within the division. A defense official speaking on condition of anonymity said up to seven soldiers are involved.

Hannah said soldiers questioned will be allowed to seek legal assistance, but she declined to say if any one had been charged.

"Once the investigation is complete, the chain of command will take appropriate action," Hannah said.

The military-themed Web site does not appear to make any direct reference to the 82nd Airborne or Fort Bragg. The registered owner of the Web site's domain name lists an address in Fayetteville, the city that adjoins Fort Bragg.

E-mails to the registered owner were returned Friday as undeliverable, and the phone number listed on the domain-name registration is no longer in service.

The Web site includes a disclaimer, asking users to agree that they are not agents of the U.S. government, Department of Defense, members of law enforcement or reporters.

Martha Rudd, an Army spokeswoman at the Pentagon, said soldiers accused of homosexual activity might be removed from their units, although she did not have specific information about the investigation of the 82nd. When asked if the soldiers involved had been moved out of barracks, Hannah declined to comment.

"We are concerned about the privacy and rights of each trooper involved and that they are treated with dignity and respect," Hannah said.

Maj. Todd Vician, a Defense Department spokesman in Washington, said the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy states that "homosexual orientation alone is not a bar to service, but homosexual conduct is incompatible with military service."

"We define homosexual conduct as homosexual acts or verbal or nonverbal communication that a member is homosexual," Vician said.

The 82nd Airborne is one of the most celebrated units in the military. Its 15,000 troops are trained to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours.

Soldiers from the division have served extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan, and several thousand troops remain overseas.
